5 Essential Oils To Help You With Your Migraines!

A migraine, usually on one side of the head, can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation. Nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound often accompany it. Migraine attacks may last from a couple of hours to days, and the pain may be so severe that it interferes with your everyday activities.

Basically a headache on steroids. It is one of the the most debilitating neurological disorders and occurs in a variety of symptoms – the most common are painful recurrent headaches. Headaches are the leading causes of ambulance and emergency department visits and remain a major public health issue, especially among women during their reproductive years.

A warning symptom known as an aura takes place before or with the headache for some people. An aura may include visual disturbances such as light flashes or blind spots, or other disturbances such as tingling on one side of the face, arm or leg.

If swallowing pills doesn’t sound good to you, you are in the right place. This is where the essential oils come in. Here are a few essential oils that you can use to treat migraines.

1. Rosemary Essential Oil

Effective option for migraine-relief is the rosemary essential oil. It helps to treat headaches due to the chemotype 1,8-cineole’s stimulating, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. It has a calming effect on the body and helps to reduce stress and insomnia.

How To Use

  • In a cup of tea, water, or soup, add 1 or 2 drops of rosemary herb and drink it when migraine attacks occur.
  • You can also mix two drops of rosemary oil with two drops of peppermint oil and one teaspoon of coconut oil. Use this to massage your forehead, temples and the front and back of your neck.

Note: Individuals with seizures or bleeding disorders should not use rosemary oil as the oil may aggravate the problem. Consumption or use of rosemary oil during pregnancy should be avoided at all times as it can stimulate menstruation and cause uterine contraction or miscarriage.

2. Chamomile Essential Oil

The anti-inflammatory properties of chamomile essential oil may help to reduce headaches of migraines. A study published in Medical Hypotheses in 2014 hypothesized that chamomile oil is a novel but effective treatment for migraine pain relief.

Therapeutic-grade roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), is particularly appreciated for the treatment of migraines as it helps with stress, insomnia and anxiety, which are some of the common culprits of a migraine attack.

  • Dilute 1 or 2 teaspoons of any carrier oil with a few drops of chamomile essential oil and use it to massage your temples and forehead.
  • In a bowl of hot water, put a few drops of essential chamomile oil and inhale the steam.

3. Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Traditionally, essential Eucalyptus oil is used to treat various types of headaches, including those experienced by migraine patients. This essential oil works best for chronic sinusitis-induced migraine attacks.

  • Mix 1 drop of eucalyptus oil with 1 teaspoon of any carrier oil and apply it to your forehead, chest and temples.
  • In a large bowl of hot water add a few drops of eucalyptus oil and breathe in the vapors.
  • You can also put on a handkerchief a few drops of eucalyptus oil and occasionally inhale the smell.

Note: The best way to treat migraine is to use Eucalyptus globulus’ therapeutic-grade essential oil. Undiluted oil application may cause severe burns, so make sure you are diluting essential eucalyptus oil as directed at all times.

4. Lavender Essential Oil

The anti-inflammatory nature of lavender oil helps mitigate the damage caused by headaches and migraines. It also dilates the vessels of the blood. It even helps you to sleep better and lowers stress, addressing two of migraine’s most common triggers.

  • In a bowl of warm water add 5 drops of lavender oil. Cover your head with a towel, lean over the bowl, and take up to 15 minutes of deep breaths. By inhaling these therapeutic vapors, your headache will be toned down.

Note: For young boys who have not reached puberty, topical application of lavender oil may be unsafe as it may cause hormonal imbalance. It is recommended to keep essential oils out of reach of children as a general rule of thumb.

5. Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint oil is one of the essential oils that is most commonly used for treating headaches of migraine. It contains menthol, which works as a pain reliever. In addition, essential oil of peppermint does the trick to ease nausea that comes hand in hand with migraines.

  • Dilute 2 or 3 drops of peppermint oil with a couple of teaspoons of olive oil, coconut oil or any other vegetable oil and rub it on your forehead, neck and shoulders.
