Why do teeth turn yellow and how to Whiten Your Teeth?

To understand how to whiten teeth, it is necessary to clarify the cause of their darkening or yellowing. Several factors are involved, the most important of which include genetic predisposition, food and drink intake, and hygiene levels.

The tooth consists of 4 tissues:

Enamel – the most superficial, white tooth envelope, composed primarily of calcium phosphate;

Dentin is a solid substance beneath the enamel that has a yellowish color; It is made up of living cells that produce a solid mineral substance;

Tooth pulp – a soft substance located in the innermost part of the tooth. Containing blood vessels and lymph vessels, as well as the nerves of the tooth;

Cement: A layer of strong connective tissue surrounding the root of the tooth that connects the tooth’s root to the gums and jaw.

The most relevant to tooth color are enamel and dentin. Some foods and beverages directly color the enamel, but most act as they gradually tear down the enamel and reveal the yellowish dentin beneath it.

These tools aim to whiten teeth that have already lost some of their enamel, but it is also important to strengthen them to prevent further damage.

Soda and lemon juice

Soda (sodium bicarbonate ) is a substance with an abrasive action that helps to remove the enamel layers mechanically. Its alkaline nature is essential to counteract the increased acidity in the oral cavity, especially if you prefer more acidic foods and drinks. In combination with lemon juice, the soda neutralizes the acidity of the lemon juice, which acts as a natural bleach for the tissues.

It is best to alternate pure lemon juice with a mixture of baking soda and lemon juice for a few days of the month to prevent the side effects associated with excessive use. Mix a few tablespoons of baking soda with enough freshly squeezed lemon juice (or water) to make a thick paste.

Using a paper towel, dry your teeth well, apply the mixture to the brush, and gently brush your teeth without excessive pressure. Allow to stand for about 1 minute, then rinse. If you use only soda and water, it can last up to 3 minutes.

Berries, salt, and soda

Strawberries are rich in Vitamin C, which can help break the plaque, often the cause of yellowing on the teeth. In addition, the malic acid in strawberries helps to remove surface spots. Salt acts as an abrasive, and the soda complements the whitening and abrasive effect (you may not use it if you wish).

Whip up 1 to 3 large strawberries, add a pinch of sea salt, and half a teaspoon of baking soda (optional). Dry your teeth from saliva and use a toothbrush to apply the mixture to your teeth, shaking vigorously. Allow the mixture to stand for 5 minutes, then rinse. Do this every night.

Oxygen water and soda

Oxygen water is a chemical with an antiseptic and whitening effect.

To use it as a teeth whitener:

  1. Mix the two ingredients to create a paste-like texture.
  2. Apply to the teeth with a toothbrush, careful not to fall on the gums. The mixture can be stored in a tightly-closed container for up to 2 weeks.
  3. Do not hold on to your teeth for more than 2 minutes, as prolonged exposure to hydrogen peroxide can cause white spots to form.
  4. Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  5. Do this several times a week.

Attention! Be careful when handling hydrogen peroxide as it can cause side effects on the oral mucosa and throat when improperly used! In no case should you swallow or use on gargle!

Coconut oil

It may sound crazy, but in fact, coconut oil is an excellent tool for healthy and white teeth. The effect is due to the presence of lauric acid in the coconut oil, which helps to remove the bacteria in the plaque that gives it a yellow color.

Use in the morning before routine tooth brushing. It is enough to put a small amount of coconut oil on the brush and spread it on your teeth. Brush your teeth on all sides for 3 to 5 minutes, then rinse with water and brush your teeth as usual.

You can use these tools in the evening if you feel comfortable after brushing your teeth with regular toothpaste.

Banana peel

You can use the inside of a banana peel rich in potassium, magnesium, manganese, and other minerals that contribute to teeth whitening and enamel healing.

To do this, dip your toothbrush in the charcoal powder or pre-prepare the charcoal powder paste with some water. First, brush your teeth for a few minutes. Then leave the charcoal on the teeth for a few minutes to allow time to bond with the stains. Initially, you can apply daily for one week. Then, dilute to once a week.

It is important to note that activated (medical) charcoal is not identical to charcoal accumulated under a grill or fireplace!

Eat more crunchy fruits and vegetables.
